Want to get into VTubing but aren't sure where to start? In addition to a computer, webcam (or smartphone), and microphone, you're going to need some quality VTuber software.

There are two kinds of software for VTubers: software you can use to create your VTuber avatar and software to track your movements when broadcasting. This article will discuss some of the best apps from both categories for budding new VTubers.

What Is VTubing?

VTubers, also called virtual YouTubers, are live streamers or YouTubers who use digital avatars. VTubing originated in Japan through a character called Kizuna AI on YouTube. From there, agencies like Nijisanji started recruiting voice actors to turn into virtual stars.

These days, anyone can become a VTuber without the need for an agency or production company. Popular VTubers on Twitch and YouTube typically play games, sing, or just chat with their audience.

There are two types of VTuber avatars: 2D and 3D. 2D avatars are slightly more desirable within the VTubing community because "rigging" offers more customization. In the end, whichever model type you choose will come down to personal preference and what fits your skills and budget.

VTuber Creation Software

When first starting out, many people choose to make their own VTuber models to cut down on costs. Bespoke VTuber models typically run between $1,000 and $5,000, depending on the quality of the model and skill of the artist. Naturally, VTuber models are expensive for a reason; it takes time and skill to create high-quality custom avatars.

Most beginners who want to make their own avatars will start with a simple PNG (also called PNGTubers) or use beginner-friendly VTuber creation software for 3D models. The creation of a 2D VTuber model differs greatly from 3D.

1. VRoid Studio

A female, 3D VTuber model with pink hair and glasses made in VRoid Studio.

VRoid Studio allows you to create 3D avatars for VTubing and is one of the most popular apps for beginners. VRoid Studio is very user-friendly, versatile, and powerful enough for experienced animators as well.

A beginner to VRoid Studio might spend a few hours making an average-looking model like the one pictured above. However, a capable artist who is familiar with VRoid Studio's tools can produce a model of much higher quality, like that of Snowdrop, a character created by 39studioJP on YouTube.

There are a lot of VRoid Studio videos on YouTube, all of which show that with practice and some basic art skills, you can take an "okay" 3D model and turn it into a unique, high-quality work of art. Look no further than VRoid Studio if you're serious about creating your own 3D VTuber model on a budget.

2. Live2D Cubism

When it comes to 2D VTuber avatars, first they need to be drawn in some sort of digital art software before you rig them in software like Live2D Cubism. Live2D is a household name in the VTubing community and an absolute must if you want to animate your 2D VTuber model.

Though there's a steep learning curve to this powerful software, it's well worth the time, energy, and frustration if you can't afford to pay someone to rig your model.

Live2D is one of the more pricey programs on our list at roughly $15.99/month (prices fluctuate according to the exchange rate for the Japanese Yen). Even if you're not an aspiring VTuber, it's a worthwhile (and necessary) investment if you're interested in rigging avatars for other hopeful VTubers as a way to make money.

The good thing about Live2D is that you can get a free trial for 42 days. To make the most of your free trial, we recommend learning as much as you can about rigging before you start. You can check out the Live2D YouTube channel to watch tutorials; they're only available in Japanese but with auto-generated English subtitles.

Other VTuber Creation Software

Blender for 3D animation is a popular program in the VTubing community and is both free and open-source. For 2D avatars, while Live2D is the gold standard, some creators use Adobe Character Animator.

The "Live 2D Alternatives" list from AlternativeTo suggests some comparable alternatives to Live2D that are inexpensive or even free. Before downloading anything, it's a good idea to do some research about any software you're interested in, or you can reach out to a community like Virtual YouTubers on Reddit for suggestions.

VTuber Tracking Software

When it comes to tracking software, there are two household names in the VTubing industry: VSeeFace for 3D avatars and VTube Studio for 2D avatars. However, as the demand and interest in VTubing increases, other software titles have been popping up amid the growing trend.

There are other programs that offer tracking services with their premade avatars, but they don't really fit the "anime-style" aesthetic that is popular among VTubers.

3. VSeeFace

VSeeFace is the most popular tracking software for 3D avatars and is free to use. It's a fairly straightforward piece of software and can be set up with programs like OBS or Streamlabs Desktop for live streaming.

To use VSeeFace, you'll need a webcam and your own 3D avatar, which needs to be imported directly into the software. From there, all you need to do is test your avatar's movements and calibrate your camera if necessary.

4. VTube Studio

For 2D avatars, it doesn't get any better than VTube Studio. With VTube Studio, you can import your own model or use one of the premade models that come with the software. It's free to download and use, with the option to pay a fee to remove the watermark.

In VTube Studio, there's even the option to pin digital accessories on your model, from cat ears to sunglasses. It does a great job with tracking and can be downloaded for your PC via Steam. If you don't have a webcam or would rather use your phone, VTube Studio has an app for both iPhone and Android.

5. VTuber Maker by Live3D

Don't be confused by the name; Live3D isn't affiliated with Live2D Cubism, nor can you make a VTuber with this software. Live3D is similar to VSeeFace, except it includes premade models for you to use.

While Live3D itself is free, many of the features are locked behind a paywall, including most of the premade avatars. Still, you might prefer this route if you don't have the funds to purchase a custom model.

Other VTuberTracking Software

Animaze by Facerig and Adobe Character Animator can be used for living streaming and come with premade avatars. Neither of these programs come with the anime-style avatars, however, which are popular in the VTubing community.

Animaze offers a variety of free animal avatars like dogs and cats, as well as avatars you can purchase with in-app currency. Adobe Character Animator has cartoony avatars that have a fun, childish nature to them.

Start Your VTubing Journey the Right Way

If you're interested in becoming a VTuber, there are several programs to help you get started. VRoid Studio is great for helping beginners make a 3D avatar from scratch. Live2D is the program you'll need if you want to go the 2D route, though you'll need to draw your model first. Once your model is ready to use, either VSeeFace or VTube Studio is your best bet for face tracking.

Before you decide to spend a hefty chunk on a bespoke model, try making your own avatar and streaming for a while to be sure you enjoy it.
